We started the month with a hike up Hawk Mountain. Hawk Mountain is a beautiful sanctuary that runs alongside the Applachian Trail perfect for hiking and raptor sighting. We hiked the three miles or so with Will's Cub Scout pack and their families. Along the way we enjoyed climbing the rocky terrain and spotting numerous types of raptors like falcons, turkey vultures and a few hawks. We were also lucky enough to hike to the counting station where Park Rangers count and track the migration of these magnificent birds of prey.
The rest of the month was spent working on Halloween costumes and winter storm watching. Luckily, the annual Macungie Parade was held Oct. 22 a full week before our freaky snow storm. The kids each walked with their scouting groups. Ernie walked with Will and his derby car themed-Army Striker. I walked with Josie and the beauty queens of Troop 6229. Josie opted to be a pageant reporter rather than a beauty queen, and the leaders had fun with our sashes too, I was Miss Fortune.
Next, we watched with a snow globe perspective as 8-10 inches of snow fell on the Lehigh Valley and left countless residents without power as snow heavy branches cracked and split knocking out power and blocking highways. Luckily, we only lost power Saturday evening into Sunday morning. It's nice to slow down and relax nothing like a snowstorm to force you to do that...the kids played lots of LEGO and Josie and I baked Halloween goodies for their school parties. Will assembled the entire Star Wars fleet...that boy can build a LEGO creation.
School was canceled on Monday so the kids didn't get to march in their school's Halloween parade around Alburtis. But, we did carve pumpkins and trick-or-treat and the kids did load up on lots of candy.
