While at the Crayola factory in Easton, PA we also explored the Canal museum and learned all about the canal ways in the area. The kids even got to pretend they were navigating a canal barge in the waterworks area. The museum was so full of interesting things to see and do we spent the entire day there and then finished up with ice cream at the Purple Cow.
Canals are man-made channels for water. There are two types of canal:
Waterways: navigable transportation canals used for carrying ships and boats shipping goods and conveying people.
Aqueducts: supply potable water for human consumption or irrigation.
There are many canals in the United States and quite a few in our area. The canal in Easton dates back to as early as 1727 and is a towpath canal because mule were used to pull the barges down the canal. Here's a few pictures of the kids at the canal museum.
Next, we went down to the second floor and learned about how crayons are made, wrapped and assembled. We also got free samples of the latest crayons and markers. The kids also got to try out some of the art supplies and made a few fun projects to take home. We really enjoyed the meltdown area where you can make art with melted crayons.
Since it's National Ice cream month we couldn't resist a stop at the über cool Purple Cow ice cream shop...
