A New York City Christmas

New York at Christmas time has always been on our bucket list of travel destinations.  We went the day after Christmas and it was cool to see Rockefeller Center and 5th Avenue all decked out for the holidays.

We started our day on the PATH train from Newark, NJ.  After a 20 minute ride we were at the World Trade Center Memorial.  We navigated our way through the many security check points and at last arrived into a beautiful, tranquil place.  The large water feature surrounded with the names of the fallen was breathtaking.

Next stop lunch:  We walked from the Financial District up Church Street and went through Chinatown before stopping at Lombardi's Pizzeria in Little Italy.  Lombardi's known as the oldest pizza joint in the city.  It's been there over 100 years.  After a large pepperoni pizza we couldn't resist dessert at one of our favorites, Pinkberry.

Soho was right around the corner so we went to the new REI which is housed in a historic building with an interesting past. The Puck Building was once the printing facility of J. Ottmann Lithographing Company and Puck Magazine, which ceased publication in 1918.   An office stationery company, S. Novick & Son, once occupied the second floor. Notable amongst the firms' salesmen was Alger Hiss, the former assistant Secretary of State who was brought down in a spy scandal in the 1950s.
In the 1980s the Puck Building was the home of Spy Magazine, whose editors informally dubbed it "The Spy Building".

After our shopping spree we took the 6 train to Rockefeller Center.  Once we emerged from the underground station we were thrust back into the holiday spirit.  The three block area was lit up as the sun was nearly setting.  The Rockettes were performing at Radio City Music Hall and everyone in the world was in Manhattan and around the "tree!"  We skirted along the edge and made our way into American Girl and LEGO.  LEGO gave us the best view of the famous tree and the skating rink below.  But since it was way too crowded for anyone to enjoy themselves we called it a day, and headed back to the subway.

As we went back by the World Trade Center Memorial at night the skyscrapers being built around the memorial were lit up and beautiful to see.
