Callie--beautiful and loved

We are in Virginia and arrived here safely. After the joy of reuniting with family our perfect day took a turn for the worse. We lost our beautiful girl Callie Wallie this morning. She was so happy to be in Virginia and was running all over the yard and harassing the squirrels outside and the cats inside when she collapsed around 9 p.m. on August 12th.

We rushed her to an emergency after hours clinic "South Paw" and they were able to stabilize her. They brought her BP up from 40 to 120 and gave her IV fluids while they searched for the reason for her collapse. After some blood work and an X-ray they were able to determine that she had a huge tumor in her abdomen. We left around 1 a.m. assured that she was OK for now and that they would do further test in the a.m. to see where the tumor was.
She made it through the night and was comfortable and well taken care of--thanks to the staff at South Paw.

After the abdominal ultrasound we received a call from the Dr. and her diagnosis was grim as we had predicted. Callie had a huge tumor attached to her liver (they were very sure it was a bad tumor because it was bleeding and also because it had grown so fast). She had x-rays back in Jan. when she was diagnosed with IBS and there was no indication of cancer then.
So after speaking with Ernie's sister who is a vet--Ernie and I decided to forgo surgery and chemo and we let Callie go.

The kids, Mimi, Ernie and I went to the hospital to visit her.
We were able to take her on one last "puppy walk" and we even gave her 7 cookies--we also spent about 1 hour just being with her before we said good-bye.

Ernie and I held her tight and told her we loved her as she passed away. She is gone, but in a better place and we are very thankful for the time we spent with her and will never forget our beautiful girl.

We know that everyone that met Callie was always taken by her kind eyes and carefree spirit so we wanted to share this information with all of you and we ask that you keep our family in your prayers as we go through this very difficult time.

"One who possessed beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man, without his vices. This praise would be unmeaning flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the memory of my dog."--Lord Byron
